What is wire EDM?
Wire EDM, also known as Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM), is a non-mechanical CNC-machining process used to accurately cut electrically conductive materials. Instead of applying cutting forces, we remove material through controlled electrical discharges.
During the Wire EDM process, a thin continuously fed wire, typically brass, follows the programmed contour of the part. Thousands of electrical sparks occur per second between the wire and the workpiece. These sparks generate very local peak temperatures up to 20.000 degrees Celsius, causing microscopic portions of material to melt and evaporate. The energy is immediately dissipated by the dielectric fluid, limiting thermal influence on the surrounding material.
Because Wire EDM operates without mechanical contact, there are no cutting forces acting on the part. This makes the process highly suitable for machining hard, hardened, or difficult-to-machine materials such as tool steel, carbide, and titanium. Wire EDM also enables the production of complex geometries, sharp internal corners, and fine details with high accuracy and repeatability.
Wire EDM is widely used in precision engineering, tooling, machine building, med-tech industry and high-tech applications where dimensional stability, accuracy, and process control are critical.
This gives several key advantages:
- Excellent for hard or difficult-to-machine materials
- Tight tolerances and high dimensional stability
- Complex shapes and sharp internal radii
- No thermal distortion from tool pressure
Perfect for precision components, prototypes and parts that are challenging to produce with conventional machining.
Why Wire EDM at Voltarc?
We are engineers who think along with your design. Besides that we have a detailed eye for:
- Manufacturability and optimization of your design

Our workflow
Aligned with our general workflow, we follow the same 5 steps for Wire EDM:
Analysis & preparation
We review the design, functional requirements, tolerances and manufacturability. From this we define the optimal EDM strategy and a realistic lead time and cost estimate.
Process planning & programming
The design is translated into a precise EDM program. Fixturing, wire selection, process sequence and technology choices are defined and documented.
EDM machining
During machining we monitor parameters, wire condition and process stability to ensure accuracy, repeatability and surface quality.
Measurement & control
Critical dimensions are measured with certified equipment, with optional full measurement reports.
Delivery
Parts are delivered cleanly finished with all agreed documentation. We maintain tight timelines and communicate transparently.
