Micro-Machined Features

Micro-Machining

To illustrate what we at Voltarc mean by micro-machining with EDM, we spark-eroded a demo part based on our own logo. Not as a marketing object, but as a technical reference part demonstrating the possibilities of thin-walled geometries and process stability.

In this part, ribs have been produced with a wall thickness of approximately 150 µm over a height of 17 mm. At this scale, it’s not just about “fine work,” but about control: how the material behaves and how energy is applied. For this reason, a 0.1 mm wire was chosen. The machining was deliberately carried out step by step, focusing on stability and reproducibility rather than speed.

Your challenge, our precision.

Furthermore, this geometry required the use of small starter holes to enable internal contours and sharp features. It is precisely this combination, slender ribs, high aspect ratio, and minimal access, that makes the part susceptible to deformation and instability with conventional machining.

This demo part illustrates what we mean by micro-machining: not because the part is small, but because the geometry becomes so critical that process control is paramount. We apply the same approach to complex precision parts for development, prototyping, and high-mix applications, where thin walls, small radii, and reliable repeatability are essential.
